Biographical / Historical
David Spring was born in Toronto, Canada in 1918. He received his B.A. from the University of Toronto before earning his PhD in British History at Harvard University. He served as a professor of history at Johns Hopkins University for forty years (1949-1989) and was a noted historian of the social and economic history of Great Britain in the 19th century. During his tenure, Professor Spring published several books and articles on subjects including the British landed elite and directed the dissertations of more than a dozen noted academics in British history. His memorial from the American Historical Association ends by noting "David Spring was urbane, a witty and ironic lecturer, the perfect Victorian gentleman."
