Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection concerns Ballentine's research and teaching, with numerous recordings and copious notes planning his lectures, which are located in Series 2. There are also several lab notebooks regarding his research, which are located in Series 3. A limited amount of slides are also available in Series 5. There is also material concerning his work with orchid cultivation and judging, as well as his work with the Baltimore Minerological Society, which is located in Series 6.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Ballentine was born and raised in New Jersey. He obtained Masters and Doctoral degrees at Princeton University and taught at Columbia University from 1943 to 1948. He began teaching at Johns Hopkins University in 1949 and retired in 1979, although he continued teaching as a professor emeritus until the 1990s. He was active in several botanist groups during his lifetime and was an accredited judge of the American Orchid Society. He died on January 17, 1998.

Processed by Rosemary Spellman in 2012. The Ballentine papers recieved an overall collection record, but, at the time, detailed series information was not supplied. Additionally, folder titles were transcribed exactly as written by Ballentine including acronyms and abbreviations.
