Scope and Contents

This collection contains administrative files regarding the operation of subdivisions under the Department of Special Collections within the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University dating from 1927 to 2009. Materials include correspondence, subject files, project plans, information and statistics regarding patron use, records of gifts, references requests, and other information concerning the day-to-day operations of special libraries.

All collections are closed except to office of origin or original owner until processed. University records are closed for 25 years from the point of creation. These files contain personnel records, which are subject to further restrictions.

Biographical / Historical

Special Collections, a division within the Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries, houses rare books, manuscripts, personal papers of such Hopkins scholars as Daniel C. Gilman, Herbert Baxter Adams and Isaiah Bowman, and collections such as the Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection, the Hutzler Collection of Economic Classics and the Byron collection. The Ferdinand Hamburger, Jr. Archives also constitutes part of Special Collections.

This collection contains administrative files regarding the operation of subdivisions under the Department of Special Collections within the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University dating from 1927 to 2009. Materials include correspondence, subject files, project plans, information and statistics regarding patron use, records of gifts, references requests, and other information concerning the day-to-day operations of special libraries.

This record group is subdivided into seven Sub-Groups: Departmental Files; Garrett Library; Manuscripts Unit; Peabody Library; Rare Books Unit; The Ferdinand Hamburger, Jr. Archives; Events.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Most of the materials transferred by Special Collections were probably originally part of John C. French's "University History Collection." The materials in Accession Number 78.43 came from the Gilman Hall Stacks. The materials in Accession Number 81.44 were located in Special Collections on A Level of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. Accession 2023-24-RG-03-012-001 containing Edible Book Festival materials was transferred to the archives by Heidi Herr in 2023.

Processing Information

Records of this collection were formerly part of Record Group 03.010: Records of the Johns Hopkins University Library (divided into 13 Sub-Groups). Information regarding the re-processing of this collection was retained.
