History
Until 1969, there was no central office for coordinating University publications. In the early days, many of the publications and notices were apparently handled through Thomas Ball, Registrar and de facto assistant to President Gilman. Generally, however, each individual department produced its publications by working directly with commercial designers and printers. In 1969, Thomas J. Kleis (formerly Assistant Director of Public Relations) became the first Director of University Publications. He held that position until 1982, when he was succeeded by Robert Hewes and, in 1984, by Patricia Kramer. The Office of University Publications provides a variety of services including in-house design work and coordination of commercial printing and production.

Abstract
Until 1969, there was no central office for coordinating University publications. These materials are actually an artificial collection rather than a group of records generated by a single University office. The collection consists of both serial and occasional publications of the University. The former include Circulars, Registers, Annual Reports of the President, Directories, Student Directories, The Freshman Record, and Phonebooks. The occasional publications include a wide variety of materials, such as brochures and broadsides. The publications range in date from the University's founding in 1876 to the 1990.
Provenance
The scrapbooks, Circulars, Registers, President's Reports, and Directories were all found in the Gilman Hall Library stacks. Current materials are sent to the Archives by the Office of University Publications on a continuing basis. Some materials have been sent by other offices: Johns Hopkins Press, Library, Alumni Information Services, Alumni Relations and Registrar. Other materials were contributed by alumni (or surviving relatives): William E. Trout, Jr. (A.B. 1925, Ph.D. 1935), John A. Sauer (B.E. 1925), C. Wilson Josselyn (A.B., 1924), George E. Hardy, Jr. (A.B., 1923), George Washington McCreary (A.B., 1879), and John R. Sherwood (A.B., 1923).
