Vice President for Homewood Divisions records

 Record Group
Identifier: RG-13-001

Scope and Contents

The records of the Vice President for Homewood Divisions range in date from 1961 to 1976, when the position was abolished. The records, which consist primarily of the subject files of Vice President George Benton and his assistant, Larry Denton, are concerned with the management of academic support operations on the Homewood campus. These operations included the library, the Admissions Office, student housing, the registrar's office, and the campus computer center. Similar records on many of these subjects, from a later date, can be found in the records of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies (RG 03.005), which eventually assumed responsibility for many of the duties of the Vice President for Homewood Divisions. Types of records include correspondence, memoranda, budget planning documents, and reports. In addition to Benton's own records as Vice President for Homewood Divisions, this record group also contains material from Benton's tenure as Dean of Arts and Sciences, including some records of his predecessor in that position, Allyn Kimball. There are also records of Vice President for Administration, Benjamin Willis (and his predecessors Bruce Partridge and Robert Kerley); Benton inherited these records when he assumed many of Willis' responsibilities as part of the reorganization in which his position was created and Willis' was abolished. This record group is arranged in one series, with files in alphabetical order.

History

In March 1972, George S. Benton, who had been Dean of Arts and Sciences since 1970, was named to the newly created position of Vice President for Homewood Divisions as part of a general administrative reorganization undertaken by the recently appointed president, Steven Muller. Benton was to be the chief administrative officer for the Homewood campus, and was given responsibility for three major classes of support functions. These were (1) administrative support, which included plant operations, administrative systems, and sponsored research; (2) academic support, which included the MSE Library, and the Offices of the Registrar, Admissions, and the Chaplain; and (3) student support, including housing, food service, the Athletic Center, and financial aid. Benton's vice presidency was abolished in June 1977, when Benton resigned, and his responsibilities were divided among several offices, primarily the Vice President for Administrative Services, the Dean of Academic Services, and the Vice President for Finance and Management Systems.
