William Bland is a pianist and composer who graduated from the Peabody Conservatory with a doctor of musical arts degree in 1973. His papers include manuscript and photocopied scores of his compositions as well as one LP record.

William Bland, born in 1947 in West Virginia, is a pianist, composer, and teacher. He attended Peabody Conservatory and graduated with a DMA in composition in 1973. Before graduating, Bland served as an assistant to Peabody Institute Director Richard Franko Goldman. He then moved to New York City, where he was an assistant professor at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. In 1979 he returned to West Virginia, where he became the organist and choir director for First Baptist Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Martinsburg, and played piano with other local ensembles and visiting musicians. Bland has also taught piano privately and for the Cumberland Valley School of Music. He has composed a large collection of solo, chamber, and orchestral music that has been performed and broadcast in the United States and Europe.
Scope and Contents
The William Bland papers (1970-2001) contain original manuscript and photocopied scores of Bland's music. The compositions include chamber music, symphonic music, vocal and chamber music, and works for solo instruments. Also included is one LP record with a recording of Bland’s guitar solo, A Fantasy-Homage to Victoria.
