Scope and Contents

The Francisco Soares de Souza papers (1968-1981) contain photocopied manuscript scores of music for guitar. The compositions include choruses, preludes, waltzes, a gavotte, and several studies. Each folder contains an item-level inventory of scores.

Biographical / Historical

Francisco Soares de Souza was a self-taught guitarist and composer born in Quixada, Ceara, Brazil, in 1905. He studied and performed classical music, later composing music for guitar, including waltzes, choruses, and preludes. He moved to Forteleza later in life and became the technical director for the Guitar Circle of Villa-Lobos and the artistic director of The Guitar Club. In 1961 Souza recorded an LP, A Recital in the Guitar Club, which features ten original compositions played by Souza with accompaniment by guitarist Jose Menezes Franca. Souza composed over 60 musical works before his death in 1986.
