Biographical / Historical
Robert W. Waite, a cellist, was born in Logansport, Indiana. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville in 1935. Waite worked for the federal government for several years, serving as a decoder in 1942 for the Army Signal Corps. Through this position he met H.L. Mencken, who invited him to join the Saturday Night Club. The club was founded in 1904 by Mencken as a way for members to socialize and perform classical music. Waite played the cello in the group during its last few years of existence in the late 1940s. He died in 1994.
