Scope and Contents

The Florence Brown scrapbooks and photographs, 1910-1913 (bulk), were compiled by Florence Brown while she was a student at the Peabody Conservatory and instructor at the Peabody Preparatory. The photographs are primarily of Peabody Conservatory faculty members, such as Ernest Hutcheson, and Florence Brown's student peers. The scrapbooks contain concert programs, musical magazine clippings, greeting cards, and photographs about classical musicians and musical events in Baltimore, including events at the Peabody Institute.

Biographical / Historical

Florence Brown (1889-1982) attended the Peabody Conservatory from 1910 to 1913, studying with Mrs. E. Wood, Ernest Hutcheson, and George Boyle. Taught at the Peabody Preparatory from 1912 to 1913. Married Arthur C. Penberthy in 1917 and took her husband's last name.

Abstract

Florence Brown Penberthy attended the Peabody Conservatory from 1910 to 1913, studying with Mrs. E. Wood, Ernest Hutcheson, and George Boyle. Taught at the Peabody Preparatory from 1912 to 1913. This collection contains photographs of Peabody Conservatory faculty memebers, including Otto Boise and Ernest Hutcheson, and peers of Florence Brown from approximately 1910 to 1913. The scrapbooks contain concert programs, musical magazine clippings, greeting cards, and photographs about classical musicians and musical events in Baltimore, including events at the Peabody Institute.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Pearlita Penberthy Vorster (Mrs. Helmut Vorster), daughter of Florence Brown Penberthy. Scrapbooks donated in 1981 and photographs donated in 1986.
