Scope and Contents

This collection contains manuscripts and facsimile copies of David Simon's scores, including work dating from approximately 1947 to 2000. The collection includes orchestral works, chamber works, a ballet score, solo piano works, and a lead sheet for a political ad from the 1983 Baltimore mayoral election. Also included in the collection is one folder of memorial service programs from 2018.

Biographical / Historical

David Simon was a musician, composer, conductor, educator, painter, and arts administrator. Simon studied at the Industrial School for the Arts and the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a bachelor's and master's degree in 1950 and 1951, respectively. He taught at Columbia University from 1953 to 1966, conducted the New York University Concert Band from 1967 to 1970 while acting as registrar for the Manhattan School of Music, and later acted as dean of the Manhattan School of Music from 1970 to 1979. In 1979 Simon established the Baltimore School for the Arts and continued to serve as director until 1995.
