Scope and Contents
The Robert Willoughby papers, 1938-2018, contain materials from Willoughby's career as a flute player and professor. Photographs include professional publicity images and informal personal prints. The subject files include folders related to Willoughby's education, his teaching at various conservatories, his performance activities, and the awards he received. Three photo albums from 1987 to 2011 also contain letters and greetings from colleagues and former students. The collection also contains programs of Willoughby's performances and master classes, clippings from newspapers and magazines, and other promotional documents.

Biographical / Historical
Robert Willoughby (1921-2018) was an American flautist and professor. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1942 and a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory in 1949. From 1946 to 1955 he was the assistant first flute for the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1949 Willoughby began teaching flute at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he would remain on the faculty until 1986. During this time he maintained an active performing career as a soloist and as a member of ensembles such as the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Oberlin Woodwind Quintet, and the Oberlin Baroque Ensemble. Willoughby commissioned and premiered works by composers such as Thea Musgrave and Easley Blackwood.
From 1987 to 1996 Willoughby taught flute at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1996 he joined the faculty of the Longy School of Music, where he would continue to teach part time until his death in 2018. Willoughby received numerous career honors, including a lifetime achievement award from the National Flute Association in 1996.
