Douglas Huntly Gordon, Jr. was born in Baltimore in 1903. During the 1930s, he served in the Maryland legislature. In 1938, he founded the Mount Vernon Improvement Association and spent much of the rest of his life fighting to retain the original architectural integrity of Baltimore's Mount Vernon Place. Henry Harrisse was a scholar and bibliographer whose particular interest was the discovery of America. He was born in Paris in 1829. The collection consists largely of items removed from books in the Harrisse Collection in Special Collections at Johns Hopkins dating from approximately 1876-1910, as well as correspondence about Harrisse after his death, dating from 1937-1941.
