Biographical / Historical

Stephen Gaskin (1935-2014) was an American counterculture activist who founded a spiritual commune in Summertown, TN in 1971 called "the Farm." The Farm's members took vows of poverty, pooled assets, practiced vegetarianism, and banned alcohol, tobacco, and LSD. Followers were committed to developing higher consciousness, self-sufficiency, and a clean environment. Gaskin also implemented restrictions on sexual activity, requiring couples to become engaged if they had sex and to marry if a woman became pregnant.
