Elisabeth Gilman was born in New Haven, Connecticut, December 25, 1867. She was the younger daughter of Daniel Coit and Mary (Ketcham) Gilman. Her father was a college professor and the first president of The Johns Hopkins University. Frank Johnson Goodnow, Ph.D., LL.B. (January 18, 1859 – November 15, 1939), President of Johns Hopkins University, was an American educator and legal scholar, born in Brooklyn, New York. The majority of the material is Goodnow's correspondence, but there are also lectures, addresses, writings and printed material.

The present collection is a visual account of the tumultuous period known in Italy as the "anni di piombo" (Years of Lead), from the 1960s to 1980s. These black-and-white press photographs document workers' strikes, riots, student demonstrations, and protest marches in Italy, principally Rome, Milan, Turin, and Naples. The collection spans 1969 to 1982.
